New delivery of panels to weld in this week.
I am debating raising the steering box whilst its exposed, not sure how difficult it is to do from underneath. any advice? Is it worth doing now or is it easy enough to do later?

Well i thought i'd post a few photos of yesterdays progress while i wait for 10am to tick around, i try not to wake the neighbours too early on a sunday!
used the new floor sections as a template, left myself a bit of room to work and chopped both sides out. I will leave these out for the time being, will allow the sandblasters to get better access and i also need to replace a bit of the middle section which i should be able to salvage from whats left of the floor in the other split.

I cleaned up the chassis ends and gave them a bit of a coating, most of this will be stripped with the sandblasting anyway, but i figure its good to get as much protected as possible.
Still need to get a gas bottle for the mig, so don't judge me too harshly on my welding skills, I think i'm getting there!
Front inner on! Feels like a major step in the right direction. all this cutting things off is fun, but standing back and seeing new parts go back on makes all the blood, sweat and swearing seem worthwhile. Have to fix some small sections of rust in the dog leg inner but they are in great nick considering. Hope to get the donor split up next weekend and start marking out lines and plans for the transplant! Will be good to see her with a roof again.

Thanks leroy, yeah looks like a stronger way to go. lot of links on the ssvc site as well. think i'm going to leave it for now till i know what plans i have as far as lowering it. Also without the front on i'm not sure of the steering shaft angle. Will have her on a rotisserie once the roof is on so should have ample access. |

Got back into it after work tonight, too hot for welding, so i cut out the problem areas around the floor and dog legs where they will attach to the new A pillars
I am making all the repair patches from the old roof sections, so for all the purists, it is vw metal going back in, not that i'm a total purist myself, it is just much cheaper this way!
(And no i'm not cutting and grinding in thongs, i just took my boots off asap before tidying up cause i was cooking!)
Old and new patches.

bit of a lazy weekend as far as work on the van goes, but did manage to weld in two of my little patch sections. so it looks like i did some work!
Picked up the Transporter on friday, so now that i have a towing vehicle the other splitty will find its way here so i can mark the cut lines and get the roof off. slowly but surely. |
