Brought this rusty bucket of bolts about 3 years ago. A big project to take on, taking about 3 times longer than expected and costing twice as much! This slide show sums up the first stage:
Scraped off the under seal and painted it grey underneath - same as per original. Had all components sandblasted and painted, just waiting on gearbox reco then get her back on rubber and off to painters. Getting there slowly...

No the originals were too far gone, looked like the dog had a good chew on them, but i'll keep them anyway. Got a set of TMI repro's from Vintage Vee Dub Supplies in Sydney. Not cheap but well made and have got thin timber backing. Still need some of the chrome trim though, if anyone knows where to get?
Good axle stands these 6 ton bad boys, i live 30k from the earthquake epicentre and expected the van would have bitten the dust, possibly even falling onto the Beetle parked next to it. But no, pleasantly surprised to find everything still in it's place which is quite amazing, cos if was Fckin violent! Maybe i shouldn't talk too soon though, still getting some pretty severe aftershocks...
And meanwhile....I know it's not a Kombi but it's the little bro....Got my Beetle on the road, here's a slideshow i did about my DIY paint job

It's up to sitting on axle stands waiting for the gearbox to come back Steve, then off to the paint shop - dunno when exactly. Still, at least i'll be cruising air-cooled this summer ...
Cheers Steve, yes we all good thanks, and once again the Devon survived mother natures fury! House okay and services back on so pretty much business as usual (consider ourselves very lucky compared to many...) As from yesterday the axle stands have been made redundant! She's back on terra firma, finally got the box/beam back and looking sweet
Gearbox fully rebuilt with high ratio crown and pinion which will help it fly down the freeway...
, and if so that those axle stands stood up the latest quake and kept your Devon upright.
