Ok, I just got back from the mechanic. So, here's what happened:
At some point, the cam gear has been adjusted and when it was re-installed, loctite was not used on the locking bolts, so the bolts have loosened over time. This has caused play in the cam gear which, as you can see in the photos, has severely worn the cam gear itself and subsequently gouged the oil pump, sending aluminium shavings right through the engine case which obviously caused damage to everything else.
Using the mechanics words, "nothing mechanical went wrong, it was just human error".
A lot of bad luck at my end, but should have it driving in about a month.
Disc brakes (for the front) and a new clutch will also be ordered.

thanks for the tip, although I'm going ahead with getting it rebuilt through Mark. He really knows what he is talking about and I'm happy with the "total price" he has given me for the rebuild, new clutch, heaters installed, new exhaust and disc brake conversion. Just gotta hang back til the work is done now....

Well here is an update guys.
Mechanical work was completed a little over a month ago now, and she has been cruising the streets of Melbourne ever since, getting looks everywhere she goes.
I have had numerous people stop and take photos as I drive by and have had a number of others stop and talk to me at the lights.
I love the attention that the Kombi gets and I love that it brings a smile to everyone's face when they first see it.
Anyway, here's some more pictures of the kombi and of the rebuilt motor

Re: My 1962 11 Window Split
Despite what my earlier photos showed, the original front covers were screwed and were being held together by zip ties and duct tape. Had to let them go...FrankenCab wrote:Cool , did you keep the og front covers ?

Recently tackled the door cards myself. Extremely happy with the results though!
