61 Double Door Panel

Post by sneak_e »

Picked this one up a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to Ian68 for dating it for me. I had no clue.

Gotta patch up those windows!

Question for you experts though, the passengers side rear vents point in and has the wheel arch lip of a later model where the drivers side looks period correct. The weird thing is we've had a pretty good look outside and in and it doesn't seem to have any third party fiddling? It's welded like factory and looks like it came out like this? Anyone else had anything odd come up like this?

My guess is either it's had damage and had a REALLY awesome panel repair, or apparently they were pressing panels in Melbourne? and I had a thought maybe they were either test pressing later panels and perhaps added this just to chuck together? I know if I was a private buyer and they didn't match I wouldn't have accepted it from the dealer, but perhaps it was a Govt purchase and they weren't fussy?

It's had a fair share of dents and bog in it's life. But hard to think in 1961 they would have panels from 63(?) and later?

Anyone shed some suggestions? It doesn't matter to me either way if it's a repair or factory, just curious.

The seller wasn't aware of it's origin but the last two owners before him, one was a roo shooter and then it was bought by a local small town English teacher to use as a car on his weekend citrus farm to collect oranges and teach his kids to drive.

Either way, A LOT of work ahead but looking forward to getting another bus back on the road (eventually).

cheers,
Brian

No idea about the questions regarding the vents etc but I'm sure John and a few others will be able to help out mate.

Whatever the answers it's a dandy looking bus ! Not too many of them around.

Good work Chap

drivers side is correct for your model panel it actually looks like a repair on pass side have a look under the beltline you can see filler ,pretty easy to join the side seams as per factory but even then the pass side looks to chunky welding ,ide guess pass side swipe and repair

Thanks all.

I'll end up replacing that rear panel with the period correct one at some stage.

Plenty of rust in it but nothing unrepairable. Floors are excellent and belly pan is solid. What's left of the gutters are straight. Got plans to fix the rust and try to colour match the repair panels. Weld up the windows and convert it back to a panel van. Pull and store the original motor and find something a little bigger.

Drop it and drive.
