rustyovali wrote:Great work.I plan on doing a megasquirt conversion on my Typ4 powered panel when funds allow.Could you provide some more info on the temp sensor? Also what is the small box on the left side of the engine bay?
temp sensor is a http://thedubshop.goodsie.com/ product that works better
than the GM sensor for aircooled motors (Modified GM coolant temp sensor for VW use).
the small box is a quadspark box that has 4 x bip373 igniters in it for dumb coils (coils with no igniter).
instead of buying and wiring the bip373's individually myself it's easier to to buy the quadspark
as they are all wired up ,but it turns out i am not using it anyway as i am now
using a golf mk4 coil with igniter built in (less wiring overall).
if you can adapt motorbike throttle bodies this can be cheaper than a set of dual carbs
as the microsquirt is only about $550 at the moment landed(aus dollars see below)

Sorry for the ignorance and no offence intended, but what are the key benefits of all this work your doing ? Is this for better fuel economy or drivability ? Is this going to pull better then your current set up ?
Looks all nice and hi tech in an old split, sure will bambuzle a few when they check out the harness.

I know I enjoy splits for there simplicity and ability to get going if by chance something fails. I'd be stuck for sure with all those wires etc...
Btw - me no mechanic  and your obviously all over it 8)
Cheers Linz

the main reason is drivability when tuned right they idle better they drive alot better ,but also for alot better economy & power gain . the main power gain is timming with dissys you can't adjust individual 100rpm incriments . eg- with kpa if i am cruising at light throttle doing 110klms i can have timing at 45degress advanced using no petrol and as soon as i put my foot down in an instant it drops to a usable 28degrees for power (this is an example only)
a friends timing map starts at 20 degrees and goes as high as 49
you can't do that with distributors .. it's also fun will your driving to try diffrent timming & fuel maps .
it's not for everyone and alot don't really understand it ,this is my 3rd injection car

as for being stuck if something happens on the side of the road ,of you have a laptop or smart phone with you you can diagnose it on the spot ,knock sensor will warn you if it hears something inside the case and the wirring is printed every 6 inches with what it is and where it goes
so once you get your head around it it's not as bad as it seems .
but saying that if i didn't get a bit of help from alan (r100)on here i wouldn't be anywhere near where i am

I should try and find the old dyno reports as that motor was always really smooth and had a good curve from the webers ...looks good

well over the last 2 to 3 weeks i got the ignition system running perfect ,
even gained a heap of torque and power just from the ignition map out of the 2056cc type 4.
but had a little problem , kept hearing the occasional knock ,
that sounded like it was coming from the motor .
it slowly got worse ,but couldn't work out what it could be .
as only tinware came of the motor, nothing could have dropped in .
it used to bleed a lifter down when sat for a while ,but thats not a knock.
anyway pulled the motor ,pulled heads and barrels all perfect .
started to take the flywheel off and 2 bolts where loose (the rest where tight).
but thats all it needed to stuff my crack and flywheel(found my knock)
well now my 2270cc motor will be finished and put in and the 2056cc is completly apart
and crank and flywheel have to be machines at the mating surfaces.
and then the motor rebuilt
