Thanks for the comments, been laid up with the flu, can't seem to shake it, might be a while to a update, been modifying my rottisorie to be a jig to get the front axle to rear axle spacings right, Pat here in Adelaide has made a jig to locate the front on and get the door gaps, I still think this is a easy job compared to fixing a crashed bus, all the main floor section is in great condition and I'm not fixing that much rust, seems easy to me an taken me a lot less time than fixing that Darwin bus roof, Ian

So while I havnt been feeling that good with the flu ive decided to start the straight axle conversion, I start out by measuring the long housing with the bearing in, because the short housing is different where the bearing goes.

you can see the bearing sticks out more on the short housing, about 3 mm. Then you cut the short housings as close to the cone as possible, and cut the long housings near the brake line bracket about 125mm will do. I trim the housings in my Brobo for a nice square cut, and the I trim down the cone part in the lathe till I get the right lenght,

the end result is the part that bolts to the spring plate is now 30mm closer to the brake drum, and thats because splitty housings are 30mm each side wider than a beetle.

put the metal 6bolt plate on before you weld, the weld will be covered by the seals, make sure you use the short housing bearing covers because of the difference in the housings, I have type 3 brake drums for these which I turn upside down so the hand brake cable is at the top, and use splitty rear brake cylinders coz the bleeder is above the inlet pipe, Regards Ian

After a lot of cutting, trimming, drilling out spot welds, I finally got to trial fit the front floor section, its only got a couple of scews in it but it seems to fit great, will put the doglegs on properly tommorrow and trial fit the doors.

The test today was to see if a door fits, I used the one from my darwin bus, and its just screwed together with a few tacks but it has exceeded my expectations, the door gap first fit was just amazing, all because of Pats jig.

Also test fitted the safari windows, little bit of massage but they seem to fit good

Today seems like I have achieved the result that I was going for, its all nice to be confident and optomistic but to get over this hurdle is just great, thanks to all the people who have supplied all the parts to weld this back together. Ian
