Colours

Post by joeM »

I'm sure this has been covered many times in the past, and I'm also aware that there are many different views around restoring options. With this project I am hoping to restore my van to a visually authentic look, using original colour, standard wheels etc. but I also really like the look of the two tone bus, white upper with pail blue lower.

There aren't many Kombi vans out there, and even fewer two tone vans, normally they are the one colour.
How does everyone feel about a van in two tone?
Should I stick with a single colour?

Hi Joe, your panel still has a lot of the OG Dove Blue paint. It's always gonna be your choice, but I think stick to the original colour and blend the new metal into the old with matched & flattened Dove Blue. Especially, as your Kombi is a panel van, it will look 'funny' painted in two tone, imo.
If you don't want to blend into the OG paint, but want to go full, shiny, new respray, then I still reckon it's hard to go past Dove Blue.
It's your bus, your desires for the final look, your choice......

Glad you're back at it! :D 8)

Thanks, it's good to be back.

I'm not sure if the darker Dove blue is part of the original colour. Inside is a much lighter blue, I think it's Brunswick blue. I think the van was that all over, but I could be wrong. Did they use a two tone in/out on vans?

The short answer is No. Unless special ordered, commercial splitties (panel vans, SC & DC) came in a single colour for the entire exterior and inside the front cab. Sonetimes, the cargo area in PV's wasn't painted and was just a grey primer.

Yeah, I noticed the darker blue colour on the exterior but the original lighter blue left on the interior looks like Dove Blue to me but I could be wrong.

It always comes down to personal taste but I definitely think single colours (and original colours) look better on PV's. However, you are the one that has to choose. Just google image and look at lots of photos of original and custom paint jobs for ideas to see what you like, I reckon.

No doubt they all left the factory in a single colour or in primer (special order)
But the fact is they are a commercial vehicle and lent themselves to being painted all sorts of colour schemes for advertising purpose's,
You can do what ever you want with it and it will be cool

Well Joe I've worked it out.

This thread is coming up to its 5 year anniversary... in the time interest rates have been super low. Word on the hill is they are going up... now its time to finish this this.

Finally some good news.
After years battling with my council; I finally have approval to build my shed. If all goes well, it should be ready in two months. Super excited.
I’m planning to install a hoist as well, so this year really is the year for this project to start again.
I even installed the steering back into the Kombi, in preparation to roll it into the workshop.

Did I mention I’m super excited?
